How do I sign up, and what kind of information do I need to enter? |
|
|
|
To sign up, just click the "Sign Up" balloon at the top of this page.
The Sign Up page appears. Here are the spaces you’ll need to complete on that page:
User Name That's actually a user ID to log on with. Decide on a user ID and type it in this space. Make sure this user ID is typed as a single word, no spaces; e.g., "GeorgeWashington" instead of "George Washington" (by the way, sorry, but that user ID is already taken!).
Email Type in your e-mail address. That's where Talkee will send you confirmation and other user messages.
Password Decide on a password, preferably at least 6 characters long and up to 50 characters, and type it into this space. We recommend you combine letters, numerals and special characters in your password.
Confirm Password Type in the exact same password again.
Handle Your "handle" (or nickname) is the name you want other Talkee users to know you by. For example, GeorgeWashington might use the handle "George."
I Accept the Terms of Use This is a checkbox right under the Terms of Use window. Check it via mouse click to show acceptance of the terms.
Photo You will also be required to post at least one photograph. Your account cannot be verified without at least one, and you have the option of posting up to 48! Please comply with our requests that your picture should not be offensive in any manner as outlined in the Terms of Use.
- Note: If you already have one photo uploaded and if you wish to delete it and add more, you must do this in two operations. First, on the Manage Profile page, upload your additional photos and click Submit. Then, still on Manage Profile, click the "Delete" box for the photo you want to drop.
The Sign Up page has several fields related to your personal profile. If you fill these in, you can make it easier for other Talkee users to look for you.
For help with any of the fields on the Sign Up page, click the button next to it.

What are the Terms of Use? |
|
|
|
- Never give out your phone number.
- Never give out your name or address.
- You have to be 18.
These rules are to protect users from having their privacy invaded. Check the box on the Sign Up page if you agree to these Terms of Use.
Additionally, your profile in Talkee may not include the following items: actual names, telephone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or photographs of another person that you have posted without that person's consent. You may not post any photographs containing nudity, or obscene, lewd, excessively violent, harassing, sexually explicit or otherwise objectionable subject matter.
Despite this prohibition, information provided by other Talkee users in their Profile may contain inaccurate, inappropriate, offensive or sexually explicit material, and Talkee assumes no responsibility or liability for this material.
Talkee reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to reject, refuse to post or remove any profile, or to restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to all or any part of Talkee at any time, for any or no reason, with or without prior notice, and without liability.

Most likely you’ll get an error message. Let’s say, for example, you forget to check the box that says "I accept the terms of use." You will receive the following message:
Whoops! You must read and accept the terms of use.
Most error messages in Talkee begin with the word Whoops!
Check the box (or do whatever else the message calls for) and then click again on Create My Account.

|

Log on to your e-mail service and you’ll receive the message confirming your registration and showing the userid and password you signed up with. The message tells you how to verify your e-mail address.

I tried clicking the link, but I still kept getting error messages. |

Here are some troubleshooting tips:
- Do you use a browser and e-mail service from the same company? If so, trying clicking the link provided in the confirming e-mail again. This should validate your e-mail address for Talkee.
- If that doesn’t work, copy and paste the URL string in a window of the same browser you use for e-mail (e.g., an Internet Explorer page if you read e-mail on Internet Explorer).
- If you use different Internet services for e-mail and Talkee (for example, if you logged onto Talkee via Internet Explorer and you use Netscape e-mail or AOL), copy and paste the link into the address bar of your web browser.
The link should automatically verify your e-mail address.

I followed that last suggestion, but this is the message I got on the browser screen where I tried to confirm my e-mail address: The confirmation link is not in a valid format. Try to cut and paste the entire link into the address bar of your browser. Tech support has been sent an alert about this issue and may contact you to assist. |
|
|
|
Chances are the link you pasted in looks like this:
http://www.talkee.com/Confirm.aspx
That doesn’t identify you uniquely as a user. Get the exact URL string to copy and put in the validation page URL window. It should look something like this:
http://www.talkee.com/VerifyAccount.aspx?verify=573a&ut=575a08af-a132-4752-b28b-49b271d00d19

Follow your Internet browser’s instructions for turning off cookie control.
Do you also have a firewall? If so, it’s likely to have its own cookie control too. Open the firewall management screens and follow instructions there to turn off cookie control.

But I turned off cookie protection before I started. |
|
|
|
If your cookie protection is already turned off, there might be a problem (easily fixed!) in your Internet browser. Try clicking the dropdown arrow on your URL window to pull up the validation string again.

Click on this long string so that it appears in your browser’s URL window.
Or, you can right-click on the URL and select "Open Link in New Tab" from the resulting dropdown. That will put the exact string in your URL window, and your e-mail will be validated.
You should receive a message like this:
Email Verified! Your e-mail address has now been verified. Your account is fully enabled.
Now you’re good to go. Welcome to Talkee!

I've heard of a new Talkee feature called Chatting Now. What is it? |

How do I get in on the action with Chatting Now? |
|
|
|
When you sign up, if you want other callers to know when you’re chatting, fill in the spaces for "Number I Call From" on the signup page -- one number per space. You can fill in as many spaces as you see under this heading. Just type in numbers with no spaces or hyphens or parentheses. The system will format them correctly.
Before clicking Create My Profile, you can edit or delete a number you've entered.
Filling in the "Number I Call From" spaces is optional -- you're not required to do it.

Now that you're cloaked, press 0 to get back to the lobby so you can then go on to a chat room.
If you decide not to cloak after pressing 8, just press 0 to get back to the lobby and you'll hear the message "You're in the lobby."
If you wait to press the cloaking numbers you will become visible to other callers. However, you can still cloak at any time using this same procedure.

Where can I find information about my Internet Service Provider? |
|
|
|
Name of Internet Service Provider (ISP):
This would be the service provider that you originally signed up with when you connected to the Internet. Examples: AOL, Comcast, Earthlink, Hotmail, AT&T, Yahoo, etc.
It is the company you pay your monthly Internet fee to, so the name would appear on one of the following:
- The monthly bill statement from the service provider.
- Your credit card statement if you have it automatically deducted from your credit card.
- Your bank statement if you have it automatically deducted from your bank account.
Type of Internet Connection (Broadband, Dialup):
If you do not know your Internet connection type, the easiest way to find out is to look on the bills from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), or call your ISP and ask.

I don't have a voice mail box to associate with my favorite chat line. How do I create a voice mail box? |
|
|
|
You need to enter at least one voice mail box in the window labeled "VM #" on the Sign Up page or on your Manage Profile page. If you do not have a voice mail box already, you can create one using your telephone. Here's how:
Call in to your favorite chatline.
When prompted, press 7 to acknowledge the rules and get to the main menu.
At the main system menu, press 5 for voicemail. Then press 1 to create a mailbox.
The system responds: "Get ready to write down this number. Your new mailbox number is... Your new password is... To repeat this information, press 1. To confirm and go on, press 2.
To cancel, press #."
After you press 2, the system says:
"Please record your mailbox greeting as soon as possible. Begin recording your greeting at
the tone. Since you're a star, press the star key when you're finished. Remember to stay on line to save your greeting."
After you press * you'll hear: "To repeat your greeting, press 1; to re-record your greeting press 2; to keep your greeting, press 3; to reject your greeting press *."
After pressing 3, you hear:
"Your new greeting has been saved. Record your name at the beep and press * when you are done."
After you record your name, the system says: "To repeat, press 1; to re-record, press 2; to keep, press 3; to reject, press *."
After pressing 3, you'll be at the main voicemail menu, which says:
"To review your messages, press 1; to review or re-record your greeting, press 2; to change your password, press 3, to record your name, press 4; or you can go back to the main menu press *."

What do I do with the voice mail box number once I've created it? |
|
|
|
On the SignUp or ManageProfile page, when you select a State and a Chat Line from the columns above, a window labeled "VM #" will appear after the Chat Line number. In that window, type the voice mail box number you created. It will be associated with your favorite chat line so people will know how to find you.
At any time, you can delete a chat line from your profile. You can also change or delete a voice mail box.
To delete a voice mail box, highlight the number in the window and press Delete on your keyboard. To change the number, highlight it and type the new number over it.
To delete a chat line, click on one of the chat lines highlighted in the right column on your Manage Profile page. It will disappear from the blue space under the Voice Mail label.
Note: You need at least one chat line associated with your profile. So if you have only one and you click on it, it will not disappear.
